Upgrade the installation, not just the one part that failed.

AESS upgrades switchboards, consumer mains, distribution and electrical capacity for homes, commercial properties and renovation projects. We assess what is already there, what the property needs now and what may be added next — then scope an upgrade that makes sense as a whole.

What can be upgraded

Electrical infrastructure has to grow with the property.

The electrical system installed decades ago may have been perfectly reasonable for the appliances and equipment of the time. Modern homes and businesses can ask much more of the incoming supply, switchboard and distribution system.

01

Switchboards

Replace or alter ageing or crowded switchboards, improve circuit organisation and modernise protection where the existing installation warrants it.

02

Consumer mains

Assess and replace the customer-side mains where condition, size, planned load or associated point-of-attachment work makes an upgrade appropriate.

03

Circuit protection

Review existing main switches, fuses and circuit protection and provide upgrade options suited to the installation and scope of work.

04

New circuits

Add dedicated circuits for significant new loads such as air conditioning, equipment, induction cooking, EV charging, pools or workshops.

05

Distribution

Add or upgrade subboards and submains where sheds, extensions, commercial areas or additional parts of a site need properly planned electrical distribution.

06

Renovation electrical

Use a renovation as the opportunity to upgrade the parts of the electrical installation that are difficult or expensive to revisit once walls and ceilings are closed again.

When an upgrade makes sense

The warning sign is not always a blown fuse.

Sometimes the installation is still operating, but the next project exposes its limitations. That is often the best time to assess the bigger picture instead of waiting for another trade or appliance installer to discover the problem at the last minute.

✓
The switchboard is full or difficult to expand
Adding new circuits becomes awkward when there is no sensible room left for the next stage of the property.
✓
Older fuses or protective devices remain
Ageing equipment may justify a broader switchboard review when other electrical work is already being planned.
✓
A major new electrical load is coming
Air conditioning, EV charging, induction cooking, pools, sheds and commercial equipment can all change the demand placed on the installation.
✓
The property is being renovated
Open walls and ceilings can make upgrades far easier than returning after the finished surfaces are complete.
Scope before parts

A new switchboard is not automatically the whole answer.

The board is only one part of the electrical path. Depending on the property, the incoming supply, consumer mains, submains and downstream circuits may also influence the right upgrade scope.

Questions we work through

What is the existing installation?Age, condition, available board space, cable sizes and the current distribution arrangement all matter.
What problem are we solving? An ageing board, new load, renovation, POA issue or commercial expansion can all lead to different upgrade scopes.
What is likely to be added next?If another major load is likely soon, it can be worth allowing for it now rather than repeating upgrade work later.
What can reasonably stay?AESS does not assume every existing component must be replaced. Suitable equipment can remain where the overall installation and planned work allow it.
Future-load planning

Tomorrow’s appliances can change today’s upgrade.

A property does not need every future load connected today. But knowing what is likely to come can influence board space, circuit routes, mains capacity and how the upgrade is staged.

A

EV charging

Home and fleet charging can introduce substantial new demand and may affect the way the incoming supply and switchboard should be planned.

B

Air conditioning

Multiple split systems or larger ducted equipment can add significant new load to homes and commercial properties.

C

Induction & kitchens

Modern cooking equipment and larger kitchen renovations can need dedicated circuits and may influence capacity planning.

D

Pools & spas

Pumps, heaters and associated equipment can create another layer of electrical demand and distribution requirements.

E

Sheds & workshops

Submains, machinery, welders and general workshop loads can turn an apparently simple extension into a meaningful electrical upgrade.

F

Commercial expansion

New tenancies, machinery or additional areas can require more than another circuit if the upstream distribution is already near its practical limit.

Incoming supply

Sometimes the upgrade starts outside the switchboard.

Where the point of attachment or consumer mains also need attention, it can make sense to treat the incoming supply, mains and switchboard as one coordinated upgrade rather than three unrelated jobs.

Point of attachment + mains + switchboard

AESS can assess the complete customer-side supply path and explain whether the appropriate scope is a localised repair or a broader upgrade through to the switchboard.

Where this work fits

Electrical upgrades for homes, businesses and project work.

Older homesSwitchboard, mains and circuit-protection upgrades where ageing installations are being modernised.
RenovationsElectrical infrastructure upgraded while access is available and the home is already being opened up.
Commercial propertiesCapacity, distribution and switchboard upgrades associated with changing tenancies or business needs.
Workshops & shedsSubmains, distribution and new circuits planned around the intended equipment and future use.
Property investmentPractical electrical modernisation when an owner is already investing in the broader condition of the property.
Equipment upgradesAssess the existing supply before a large new appliance, machine or piece of electrical equipment is committed to.
POA rectificationUse required external supply work as an opportunity to assess the rest of the customer-side installation.
Regional project workDefined upgrade projects across Toowoomba and surrounding regional Queensland areas.
AESS approach

Assess first. Upgrade what makes sense.

1

Understand the goal

Start with the problem you are solving and any future work or loads already being considered.

2

Assess the installation

Review the relevant supply, switchboard, distribution and circuits so the upgrade scope is based on the actual property.

3

Define the scope

Separate what needs doing now from optional improvements or sensible allowances for later work.

4

Complete & test

Carry out the agreed electrical works, test the completed installation and close out the project.

Common questions

Electrical upgrade FAQs.

Does an old switchboard automatically need replacing?

No. Age alone does not define the full scope. AESS looks at the equipment, condition, available space, existing protection and what the property needs before recommending the upgrade.

Can you upgrade only part of the switchboard?

Sometimes. The practical options depend on the board construction, existing equipment, available space and the work being added. In other cases, a complete replacement is the cleaner and more practical approach.

Can you install RCBO protection?

Yes. AESS can provide RCBO upgrade options where appropriate for the existing installation and planned work.

Can you tell me whether I need bigger consumer mains?

Yes. Where mains capacity or condition is relevant to the project, AESS can assess the customer-side mains and include replacement in the upgrade scope where appropriate.

Should I upgrade the switchboard before installing an EV charger or induction cooktop?

Not every property needs a switchboard upgrade for every new appliance, but significant new electrical loads should be considered against the existing supply, board and circuit capacity before installation.

Do you do residential and commercial upgrade projects?

Yes. AESS completes electrical upgrades for homes, renovation projects, commercial properties, workshops and other sites where the existing electrical infrastructure needs to be modernised or expanded.
